YORK - The York High School boys' and girls' indoor track teams had their first meet of the season on Dec. 15 at the annual Bowdoin College High School Relays.
The invitational meet featured teams from all over the state and from all three classes, producing a wide variety of talent in every event. The York teams both had strong showings with the boys taking sixth place with 42 points and the girls claiming ninth with 22 points.
The boys displayed much talent returning with the veteran members of the team. The sprint medley team of junior Ryan Kelly and seniors Rob Cook, Andrew Hirst and Mark Vogel claimed first place with a time of 2:40.45, breaking the previous school record, 2:41.36, set by Mickey Rose, Gabe Zinck, Adam Palmer and Alex Putnam in 2004. The team members reconnected later for the 4x200, where they claimed second place.
The 4x55 shuttle hurdle relay of freshman Mike Segalla and seniors Cook, Vogel and Mat Maertens took fourth with 38.2 seconds.
The boys' shot-put team combined for a total throw length of 110 fee, 9 inches for fifth place overall. Senior Hirst had the sixth farthest throw of the day with 43 feet, 3 inches. Also throwing were senior teammates Justin Donovan and Jacob Young, who threw 35 feet, 9 inches, and 31 feet, 9 inches, respectively. Senior throwers Hirst, Young, Dave Nieves and Josh Rennie ran in the throwers 4x100 relay, taking first place with a time of 53.17, beating last year's school record of 53.41.
The boys' triple jump team had a total length of 98 feet, 3 inches, with their combined jumps, placing fifth. Maertens tied for the fifth longest jump of 37 feet, 2 inches, while teammates junior Jayce Insko and freshman Jamie Walters jumped for 33 feet, 11 inches and 27 feet, 2 inches, respectively.
The boys' high jump team combined their jumps for a total height of 16 feet, 1 inch, taking third place. Maertens had the third highest jump of the day at 5 feet, 8 inches. Sophomore Dan Herbein jumped 5 feet, 4 inches, and Insko jumped 5 feet, 1 inch.
The girls' team also had a very successful meet.
The sprint medley relay team of senior Jenna Hosmer and juniors Molly Carl, Marina Swietek and Chelsey Tewell placed sixth with a time of 3:12.45.
The 4x55 shuttle hurdle relay of senior Meghan McCrory and juniors Tewell, Kirsten Dean and Jillian Means placed fifth with a time of 41 seconds.
The 4x200 relay team of juniors Tewell, Swietek, Carl and Emily Marshall placed fifth with a time of 1:56.65. The same team set a new school record in the junior 4x200 relay last year in 1:53.85.
The 4x800 Relay team of freshman Maggie Foster and Michaela Swiatek, sophomore Monique Boutin and junior Carl took sixth place.
The girls' triple jump team jumped for a total distance of 89 feet, 6 inches. Tewell had the fifth longest jump of 31 feet, 5 inches. Senior Regan Cleminson and junior Kelsey St. Germain jumped 29 feet, 7 inches, and 28 feet, 6 inches, respectively, to combine for second place.
The girls' high jump team combined their jumps for a total height of 14 feet, taking second place and just two inches away from tying for first. Cleminson was in a three-way tie for first place at 5 feet even. Also jumping were juniors Carl and Kaitlin Dow at 4 feet, 8 inches, and 4 feet, 4 inches, respectively.
The team's regular season meets will begin following winter break, and will be held at the University of Maine on Friday nights.
